1960 Penang, Malaysia) received his MFA from University of Massachusetts in Amherst in 1986. He also studied English Literature at Brandeis University in Waltham, as well as Education at Harvard University in Cambridge, where he received his MA.
In 1998, Cheong was appointed as Visiting Tutor at Central St. Martins in London and later as Visiting Fellow at University of London in 1999. Working in photography, film, installation and performance, Cheong addresses issues of post-colonialism, racial identity and globalization.
Especially through his innovative use of video and photography, the artist evokes discourses on political matters. In Days of Our Lives, commissioned by the tenth Lyon Biennale, with the theme “The Spectacle of the Everyday,” Cheong reconstructs classical European paintings by old masters such as Henri Fantin-Latour “with models from Europe’s former non Judeo-Christian colonies in Africa, Middle East
