Based on the David Morrell novel of the same name and directed by Ted Kotcheff, the film stars Sylvester Stallone as Rambo, a former Green Beret and highly decorated Vietnam veteran who takes on a small town and its police force when the sheriff (Brian Dennehy) pushes him over the edge.

Interestingly, it was originally intended as a slow-paced drama story with only occasional action, but the production staff felt that this simply was not working, while Stallone has since stated he wanted to buy the film and destroy it on viewing the rough cut, thinking it would destroy his career.

The result was over two hours of the film ended up on the cutting room floor and the final film was completely transformed. In North American theaters, the film was released under the title First Blood, while internationally and on some video releases, it was released under the title R
