Primakov, Yevgeny Maximovich
(b. ), orientalist, intelligence chief, foreign minister, and prime minister under Boris Yeltsin.
Born in Kiev, Yevgeny Maximovich Primakov grew up in Tbilisi; his father disappeared in the purges.
Trained as an Arabist, Primakov worked in broadcasting in the s and then became a Middle East correspondent for Pravda (and perhaps a covert foreign intelligence operative).

In the s he assumed academic posts as deputy director of the Institute of World Economics and International Relations (IMEMO), then as director of the Institute of Oriental Studies, and in as director of IMEMO.
In Primakov became a candidate member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, and a foreign policy advisor to Mikhail Gorbachev.
